Crab Shack Dabaso Mida Restaurant

Arrive by tuk-tuk, and stroll over a 200-metre boardwalk high up among the mangrove trees to reach this rustic wooden stilt hut, which boasts panoramic views over Mida Creek. The restaurant is run by the Dabaso Creek Conservation Group, an eco-initiative that promotes the conservation of the surrounding area and provides education for local fishing communities. Crack open a cold beer and tuck into locally farmed shellfish and flavorsome African sides. The signature crab samosas with refreshing tomato and mango salad are the perfect prelude to grilled lobster and generously spiced vegetarian curries.

The delightful village of Watamu is an eco-tourist’s dream, lined with sandy white beaches and hotels dedicated to sustainable tourism. Watamu is a quick snorkel away from the Malindi Marine Reserve Park, and Turtle Beach is the ideal spot for a swim and a tanning session. The village proper features quaint Kenyan shopping stalls called Dukas, where you can stock up on supplies. Make sure to visit the Gede Ruins, a mysterious and heavily overgrown 12th-century Swahili village, and the beautifully fluttery Kipepeo Butterfly Project.
